Second-Hand Markets and Collusion by Manufacturers of Semidurable Goods.∗

چکیده

I show that when oligopolistic firms manufacture semidurable goods, second-hand markets can play a key role in supporting collusive behavior. This in spite of the fact that a monopolist manufacturer has an incentive to eliminate second-hand markets – a point made by a number of authors. The idea that second-hand markets facilitate collusion is supported by the many examples in which manufacturers strengthen secondhands markets, e.g. by providing warranty coverage across owners, or by encouraging dealers to accept trade-ins. The intuition is that the prospect of obtaining a high price in a second-hand market increases the demand for new goods. This means that the expectation of a price war unleashed by the violation of a collusive agreement will decrease not only the future prices of the new and used goods but also the current price of the new good, thus making the defection itself less profitable. In this framework, I analyze the role of leasing policies, buyback policies and warranty coverage for used

Resale and Collusion in a Dynamic Market for Semidurable Goods∗

The paper studies the incentives to form collusive agreements when goods can be traded in second-hand markets. It will be shown that such incentives crucially depend on the rate of depreciation of the durable good and on consumer heterogeneity. The main contribution of the paper shows that an active second-hand market may strengthen the incentives to collude, as do policies that affect the func...

How much competition is a secondary Market ? by Jiawei Chen , Susanna Esteban and Matthew Shum April 2010

Do active secondary markets aid or harm durable goods manufacturers? We build a dynamic equilibrium model of durable goods oligopoly, with consumers who incur lumpy costs when transacting in the secondary market, and calibrate it to U.S. automobile industry data. By varying transaction costs, we obtain a direct measure of the competitive pressure that secondary markets create on durable goods m...

We ...

The Law of One Price? The Impact of IT-Enabled Markets on Consumer Search and Retailer Pricing

Recent IT research has analyzed how the performance of IT-enabled markets may differ from conventional markets. This literature has made two unexpected empirical findings. This paper presents an analytic model, and confirmatory ...
